If you are in the process of redesigning your bathroom, then your head may be filled with dreams of glamorous luxury. However, when we remind you that your kids are going to use it too, you may get slammed back down to earth with a thud! The most beautiful bathroom is reduced to a playroom once the kids gain access to it. But it’s their home as well as yours, and there are plenty of ways you can make it a luxurious resting place for them, as well as a fun play area for them. Here are our ideas for great compromises that’ll keep everyone happy!
Storage has got to be the single most important issue you’ll need to address. Children love nothing better than throwing toys around a bathroom, so you’re going to need somewhere to put them when they’re not in the bath (the toys, not the kids!). Make sure there is one big cupboard built into the design that has enough room to store the rubber ducks, the bath crayons and the kiddie cosmetics such as baby shampoo and bubble bath. That way, when they are not in use, you can throw them in the cupboard, shut the door and that’s them dealt with!
Door hooks are a great way to keep clutter organised in the bathroom. Get a separate hook for each child’s use, so that their bathrobe and towel can be hung up. You can also hang up shower puffs and spare clothes too. Assign one hook to each adult too for their dressing gowns and towels. Line the hooks up neatly along the back of the door, and hey presto – no wet towels and clutter on the bathroom floor. Encourage the children to use their hooks so that they learn to clean up after themselves.
Decorations and Toys
Choose pieces of wall art that appeal to children, but that also have an adult feel to them too. Posters and artwork look great in bathrooms. Perhaps go for a grown-up feel, but in childlike colors. Get hold of alphabet letters that can be stuck to the side of the bath while the children are in it that can be tidied away when they’re not in use. As for you, you need your entertainment too, so make sure the bathroom is stocked with luxurious bubble baths, gorgeous-smelling bath oils and really top quality soap in a stylish soap dish. Interior design is as much about the little extras as it is about the paint color and fixtures; so finish the look off beautifully with a beautiful display of flowers.
Designing a multi-use bathroom that is fit for kids as well as grownups is a challenge, but as long as you put plenty of thought into it before you begin, you are sure to come up with a solution that keeps every member of the household happy. Once it’s ready, let the kids have their fun, then kick them out, send them to bed, run yourself a bath and RELAX!
